The sustainable closure seals from Schreiner MediPharm have a recyclate content of up to 90% and offer reliable tamper evidence.
Eco-Friendly Innovation at Pharmapack
Schreiner MediPharm, a leading expert in pharmaceutical packaging solutions, successfully kicked off the 2024 trade fair year at Pharmapack in Paris from January 24-25. At the international trade fair, the pharmaceutical specialist presented its latest product developments including innovative, sustainable closure seals for pharmaceutical packaging which were showcased for the first time.
The new closure seals extend Schreiner MediPharm’s portfolio of security solutions: On the one hand, they are perfectly adapted to the threat scenarios of the pharmaceutical supply chain and the respective secondary packaging. On the other hand, they are environmentally friendly and ecologically sound because they not only offer high levels of functionality and tamper protection but also point the way toward sustainability in the packaging industry.
Ever since the EU Falsified Medicines Directive has come into effect, tamper-proof pharmaceutical packaging has been indispensable. Security seals for secondary packaging are a proven means of first-opening indication. In addition, the planned EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requires waste reductions, reusable packaging, and recycled materials. Schreiner MediPharm responds to those requirements with an innovative closure seal made of sustainable film material—with a recyclate content of up to 90% that already meets the currently planned PPWR targets until 2040. These targets propose a minimum content of post-consumer recycling material (PCR) in plastic film of 65% from 2040 on.
Schreiner MediPharm conducted extensive tests in collaboration with the Schreiner ProSecure competence center to ensure optimal material quality. The results were successful: The sustainable seal exhibits comparable performance characteristics as conventional seals in terms of high transparency, optimal printability, and highly reliable first-opening indication.
Switching from conventional to sustainable upper materials made of recyclates leads to a reduction of CO2 emissions by around 28% on film level. In the product carbon footprint (PCF) analysis, emission reductions of up to 35% can be achieved. The utilization of green electricity since 2013 and the implementation of modern heat pumps at the end of 2023 have been contributing to this PCF.
With the sustainable closure seals for reliable tamper evidence, Schreiner MediPharm is sending a signal for an eco-conscious and innovative future in the pharmaceutical packaging industry.
